According to legend, Julie lived at 732 Royal Street during the early 1800s. She was an octoroon, who is a person of mixed race, part black and part white. The mixed race women of New Orleans were famous for their beauty, and wealthy white men would enter into domestic arrangements with these women, basically buying exclusive rights to them. This was known as placage, and it was very much a business deal, with the women's family or former patron receiving a finder's fee and the woman receiving a house and maintenance for her and whatever children
